Looking ahead to the future and the push for more sustainable materials and eco friendly alternatives we have been working closely with FSC approved manufacturers. With deforestation being an issue close to our hearts we settled on the fast and natural growing Moso Bamboo.
Why choose Bamboo?
1. Bamboo is the fastest-growing plant on earth
Bamboo can grow to full size in just 3-4 months, and Moso bamboo can develop by an amazing 3-4 feet each day, compared to standard trees which take a lot longer before the wood can be used. This makes bamboo a very sustainable alternative. Added to this, pesticides and chemicals aren’t required when harvesting bamboo, which is great for the environment. This also means that cultivation is a much more natural process. Being so easy to grow, many smaller farms are opting to supply bamboo during off seasons as an alternative source of income, which can help support their business year round.
2. Bamboo is hygienic
Bamboo fibres are naturally anti-bacterial due to a substance called ‘bamboo kun’. Bamboo kun is found in bamboo fibre and is an antimicrobial bio-agent. This prevents bacteria and microbes growing on bamboo making it perfect for storage. We always varnish our bamboo to make sure nothing in the home can stain it over time, but these natural properties act as another layer of protection against mould and other bacteria.
3.Bamboo is great for the environment
Bamboo forests have many positive benefits for the environment. Every square metre of bamboo absorbs 2,672 kilos of carbon, so it’s not surprising they are known as carbon sinks! It also generates up to 30% more oxygen than most other plants and trees. Bamboo plants have extensive root systems, binding together the soil in which they grow. Not only does this help to restore over-farmed land, but it provides stability in areas prone to landslides. And importantly, bamboo forests provide habitats to bamboo loving species, although don’t worry, Moso bamboo isn’t eaten by the Giant Panda!
